Thermal transfer printing is used where the longevity requirement for the printed message or logo is high enough that direct thermal printing would not be considered a viable option.

Thermal transfer printing is more complicated than direct thermal printing because it requires a thermal ribbon, and uses ink. Direct thermal printing uses specially treated paper and no ink or toner.
