Singing the brews: How Recess Coffee make their labels pop

When it comes to good coffee, Scott Brewer – yes, that’s his real name – knows a thing or two. But in order to make sure his packaging is every bit as appealing as the beans inside, he turned to the experts at Dial A Label (DAL).

Scott and fellow hospitality veteran Anthony Iannelli are the co-founders of Recess Coffee, a new café in the leafy Canberra suburb of Griffith. As well as serving breakfast, lunch and snacks seven days a week, they source and roast their own coffee beans locally.

Scott, who cut his roasting teeth in his previous role at Barrio Collective Coffee, says the Recess team aren’t necessarily out to win awards or push boundaries. Instead, they focus on roasting clean, easy-drinking coffee that’s meant to be enjoyed – simple, straightforward and delicious.

“We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel,” Scott says. “We’re just roasting coffees that you can sit back and enjoy.”

And that’s exactly the vibe you get when you step into the café, greeted by the warm sound of vinyl records playing through custom speakers built by Tasmanian producer Pitt & Giblin.

Indeed, music plays a huge role in Recess’ brand identity – so for the café’s retail section, where patrons can pick up Recess’ beans to take home, Brewer knew that he needed the packaging to reflect this passion for sound.

“Our labels look like mini record sleeves,” Scott explains. “We wanted to take the personality of each coffee and name it after an album or song that fits. For example, our daily espresso blend is called ‘Slave to the Grind’, named after the Skid Row album.”

Having previously worked with Dial A Label (DAL) on scale labels for Anthony’s fruit shop, The Food Forum, Anthony and Scott knew just who to turn to for help with making their unique labels sing.

Scott says DAL’s vibrant, vivid colours and high-quality finishes have exceeded their expectations, and helped make their packaged beans look right at home next to the vinyl records on their shelves.

“The finish is exactly what we wanted,” he says. “Everyone loves the labels. The feedback from customers has been amazing.”

With Recess earning rave reviews since opening in August 2024, Scott says he has big plans on the horizon for his beans – including launching an online shop. With expansion in sight, he sees DAL playing a key role in helping the brand to maintain its unique identity while scaling up.

“We want to keep working with DAL as we grow,” he says. They’ve been great so far, and we’re excited to see what’s next.”
